Replacing sills (rockers)
« on: November 19, 2019, 02:08:05 PM »
Hi all,
Does anybody have any pictures of the sills (rocker panels) being replaced on their car? I am trying to get an idea about how the inner sill is fitted.
Also if anybody has replaced the jacking points as these little box sections can be bought individually.
Thanks
Peter

DB actually published some of what you're asking about in section 61 of the big blue service manual. The only folks who have the 3-part loose-leaf bound copy with lots and lots of the updates would have it.  They didn't keep it in the paperback bound copy.

I've been to a shop in the process of replacing the rockers. They removed the door and replaced with a metal frame to hold the body solid and they had the car on a rotisserie frame to make it easy to turn upside down and to also hold it ridgedly in place.

A fellow down the road from me claims to have the skills to do it and would in fact do it to his 250S if he finds a set of rockers to do it with.  I told him that I'd be happy to assist in any small way that I can just to be able to watch it happen.

to a tech with metal fabrication experience, it's just work.  To a guy like me that can take apart a motor, put it back together and maybe it runs right the first time, that kind of metal work is pure art and the world needs more artists.

One such man, and his car is here: https://www.m-100.co/content.aspx?page_id=2155&club_id=406485&item_id=829355

At one point there was someone on eBay selling "crash repair sheets" for the W111, which were issued by Mercedes and showed how to correctly repair severe crash damage and replace panels. I couldn't find them just now, however.

Thanks Squiggle Dog I will look out for those anyway.

I have actually managed to find some original NOS inner and outer sills and was wondering whether replacing will be easier than repairing.

sphere360 sells reproduction manuals. They are usually good clean, well printed copies of the originals. -CTH
