Undershields/Skid Plates
« on: November 23, 2018, 09:31:04 PM »
The first fintail I owned (a 1967 W111 230S which I bought for $100) had a set of skid plates (known officially as undershields). I thought all fintails had them, and then I realized how rare they are. The 230S was very rusty, so I parted it out and kept the skid plates. I was trying to buy a less rusty 230S with a sunroof to replace it, but the deal wasn't happening, so I decided to give up and just buy a W116 300SD. I put the skid plates up for sale and a guy named Michael Medill bought them, who was writing a restoration book about fintails, and had an extensive parts collection--but apparently personal tragedy ruined his business and plans.

Almost two years later I decided I still wanted a W111, so I thought I would try buying the skid plates back since they never come up for sale. Michael said he still had them and would sell them back to me, so I bought them back at a higher price since they were rare and he was running a business. I was just so thrilled to get them back. So, I am very grateful.

I am keeping these for a future W111 230S I might buy, which will eventually be converted into a station wagon by my rusty Universal. I just wanted to show people that they exist, and what they look like. They had one for the engine oil pan, the fuel lines, the differential, and the fuel tank. I'm missing the one for the fuel tank, but I don't mind because my car will have a tow hitch, anyway.

The front of the oil pan skid plate clamps to the front bumper support.

The subframe has studs that are welded to it for the rear of the engine oil pan skid plate to attach.

The skid plate for the fuel lines mounts under the left front floor.

I think these skid plates are such a neat option!

Here is a picture of what the fuel tank skid plate looks like (upper right).
