Last week end I had fun doing a slight repair on the rear-view mirror. Taking it out of its place take nerves of steel. I was sure I was going to break the wood trim that it is attached to. I finally just pulled with full force on it and got it out. Whewww...
Taking it apart was also stressful as I was sure springs were going to fly in every which direction. Thankfully that wasn't the case. I got it apart and was surprised and how simple the mechanism is.
The first thing I noticed is that there was red plastic all over the mirror and the housing. I guess it used to be attached to the back of the mirror.

The degradation of the red plastic on one side is noticeable when put up to a light:

So I took taped the back of the mirror with blue masking tape. The result is a uniform looking mirror!

I also found a pretty cool date stamping on the mirror.

For reassembly, I made sure to mark the middle of the mirror so I could reattach the mechanism in the correct spot.

Then I cleaned up the chrome housing with some Simichrome (great stuff!!).

I made sure to clean all the glass and mirror before reassembly.

The mirror looks a lot better!
