Is there a rare '67 200D made for French Canada?
« on: January 17, 2019, 05:26:45 PM »
I was told that my 67 200D was a rare edition made for French Canada but cannot find any info about it.  Has anyone heard of that?  Thank you!

This thread is worthless without pics! :D

What is special about it? I wasn't aware of any special cars made for French Canada in particular, but that's not to say they didn't exist.

Back in the Days when I was a Kid I have seen them all over Germany. German Taxi Companies bought them and used them. Maybe somebody imported 1 back to Canada. If you contact the Mercedes Classic Center  with the Vin in Germany they will provide you with a Data Card of your car and if it was an import for Canada or not

See links below.

Here is some nice info from Bob G.

Eventually I will list it on the selling category but want to provide as much info as I can first. I love it but not practical to keep anymore. Thanks again.

It appears from the photograph to be a normal 200D, though I can see it was made in August 1967 or later because it has the reflectors on the sides of the fenders. I'm not sure what would be different about a car made for French Canada. I know in France cars were often mandated to have yellow headlights. Maybe the previous owner mistakenly thought that all the updated features it has (which are exclusive to the late 1967 and early 1968 model years) were something special to the French Canadian market.

The sidemarker is on backwards... Yes, I am an ass, LOL.

I do have a real soft spot for 1968 Finnies, though. I wish I could adopt them all!

Haha, I noticed that, too, but had the good sense to hold my tongue. ;D

There was an option code of 498 used in the 1960's that deciphered to "Canadian version, HD heat exchanger, inapplicable to exhaust emission control".  Only then would it qualify for being a Canadian version.  Though, at the time there were no emission on diesels, so with it being a 200D that kind of negates it being a Canadian model.  And all U.S. cars received the HD heat exchanger.  A mystery!

"Rare" is a relative term.  To the guy who had it at the time, a Mercedes from Canada in his neighborhood was certainly rare.  It doesn't make it more desirable (beyond being a Mercedes) or valuable (beyond being intact).  But it does make it something to talk about, especially if the delivery code under the hood confirms it (presuming Canada had its own) or an option code (as described above) says something distinct.

You can always start a thing where anybody driving the car has to speak with an outrageous french accent (watch 'Allo, 'Allo) and go from there.

Thanks for all the advice! Even the part being on backwards is good because I am happy to know all it's issues. Thanks again.
